Spim is essentially an unsolicited IM sent to advertise. To avoid Spim, it is recommended to block all users not on your buddy list.
Screennames of Spimmers
The usual Spimmer screen name is a name and 3-5 random letters, f.e "dorrie auezvz" . Other variations include nonsensical random letters and numbers, or a name with random numbers.
Methods of Spimmers
Spimmers usually bait victims by sending IMs first. Examples include
After a victim responds to the message, a spimmer will usually send a website in the following methods.
An Advanced Spimmer will use a bot to lure you to their website. It is a fake conversation enticing you to see her website, it may look for keywords to respond to you or follow its own path of a conversation.
